• Zicam

Indications

• zinc supplement
• may promote wound healing in patients with pressure ulcers
• prophylaxis & treatment of the common cold

• intranasal agent(see Zicam) [3]
• zinc lozenges (within 24 hours of onset) [14]
• supplementation for at least 5 months ( prophylaxis) [14]

Dosage

• RDA: 15 mg elemental Zn+2/day
• zinc deficiency: 110-220 mg (25-50 mg elemental Zn+2) TID

• Injection: 1 mg/mL (10 mL).

Pharmacokinetics

• poor (20-30%) absorption from GI tract
• elimination mostly in feces

Adverse-effects

• uncommon (< 1%)

• indigestion, nausea/vomiting, neutropenia, leukopenia, hypotension, jaundice, pulmonary edema

Drug-interactions

• tetracycline: decreased effect of tetracycline
• iron, bran products, dairy products: reduced absorption of Zn+2

Mechanism-of-action

• cofactor for more than 70 enzymes
