Introduction

• Incident described in Spain in 1981 associated with consumption of canola oil denatured with aniline. The oil was apparently meant for industrial use. The symptoms were similar to eosinophilia myalgia syndrome in the US, associated with consumption of a contaminate in L-tryptophan dietary supplements. Symptoms described at various stages include severe myalgias, eosinophilia, pulmonary hypertension, scleroderma, sicca syndrome, polyneuropathy, joint contractures and psychologic disturbances. Two compounds which may be connected with these two entities are 3-(phenylamino)-1,2-propanediol and 3-(phenylamino)alanine.
