• The clotting of blood within a blood vessel.

Epidemiology

• 2,000,000 deaths/year due to thrombotic events
• most common cause of death in US, includes

• deep venous thrombosis ( DVT)
• pulmonary embolus ( PE)
• myocardial infarction ( MI)
• embolic stroke

• more than 1/2 have acquired or inherited coagulation defect
