- Thalamic afferents to the cerebral cortex ( neocortex) are excitatory glutamatergic neurons that innervate:
- pyramidal cells of layers 3, 5 & 6
- spiny neurons of layer 4
- large basket cells of layers 3 & 5
- neurogliaform cells of layer 4
