Introduction

• Tradename: Protelos (not yet FDA approved 2004)

Indications

• osteoporosis
• strontium-89 used as radiopharmaceutical in the treatment of pain from bone metastases

Dosage

• 682 mg of elemental strontium/day

Adverse-effects

• may result in defective bone growth

Mechanism-of-action

• Sr+2 can replace Ca+2 in bone tissue
• seems to decrease risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
