• Visicol (sodium phosphate)

Indications

• phosphate replacement
• bowel preparations (no longer OTC) [8]

Dosage

• IV dosing

• give dose based on sodium & phosphate levels

• see bowel preparation

• Injection: 3 mmol of phosphate/ mL (15 mL); MUST BE DILUTED PRIOR TO ADMINISTRATION

Adverse-effects

• not common (1-10%)

• edema, hypotension, hyperphosphatemia*, hypocalcemia*, hypernatremia, calcium phosphate precipitation, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, acute renal failure [6], chronic renal failure*, seizures#

• * phosphate toxicity can result in hypocalcemic tetany [3] & chronic renal failure [4,6,7] risk of acute phosphate nephropathy is low [5]
