• Production & exportation of a physiologically active substance ( cytokine, hormone, enzyme) by a cell or a gland, including mucous secretions of epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract.

• Elements of the intracellular secretory pathway include:

• maturation of secreted proteins & peptides in the GOLGI
• transport & storage in secretory vesicles
• signals resulting in fusion of secretory vesicles with the plasma membrane
