Indications

• viral infection with HIV1

Specimen

• whole blood ( ACD or EDTA)
• tissue
• urine
• store body fluids at 4 degrees C
• store tissue at -20 degrees C or below

Procedure

• reverse transcriptase PCR

Notes

• PCR primers are directed towards env, gag & pol regions of the HIV genome
• it is possible to monitor infection during the latent period
