• E3 ubiquitin ligase
• role in retrotranslocation & turnover of membrane & secretory proteins from the endoplasmic retuculum (ER) through the unfolded protein response ( ERAD)
• protein modification; protein ubiquitination
• auto- ubiquitinated; which leads to proteasomal degradation
• interacts (via C-terminal domain) with VCP
