Function

• vitamin K-dependent protein
• procoagulant inhibitor
• must be activated by thrombin

• thrombomodulin potentiates protein C activation
• thrombin/ thrombomodulin complex preferentially activates protein C, whereas free thrombin primarily converts fibrinogen to fibrin

Expression

• synthesized by liver

Pathology

• individuals with heterozygous protein C deficiency often develop thromoembolic disease before age 30
