Introduction

• The physiologic loss of accomodation in the eyes with advancing age. It begins when the near point has receded beyond 22 cm (9 inches).

Pathology

• loss of deformability of the lens?

Clinical-manifestations

• difficulty focusing on near objects
• onset is insidious
• generally begins in midlife (50's)
• disorder is progressive
• patients often require a change in corrective lenses every 2-3 years

Management

• corrective lenses
