• saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI)

Indications

• source of essential nutrient iodide
• blocks uptake of radioactive iodine [6]

Contraindications

• pregnancy-category D
• safety in lactation ?

Dosage

• 1 tab PO QD
• 16 mg for neonates
• up to 130 mg for adults

Pharmacokinetics

• the iodine is reduced to iodide in the intestine before absorbtion

Mechanism-of-action

• iodide limits its own transport & inhibits synthesis of iodotyrosine & iodothyronine (Wolf-Chaikoff effect, 1948) due to increased intracellular iodide [5]
• blocks accumulation of radioactive iodine by the thyroid [6]

Notes

• relative amounts of iodine & iodide in Thyro-Block & Irostat are not known; however, the principle of its effects are probably similar to Lugol's solution.
