  • transcriptional repression of genes via modification of chromatin, rendering it heritably changed in expressibility
  • maintain transcriptionally repressive state of homeotic genes throughout development
  • NOT required to initiate repression, but to maintain it during later stages of development
  • methylation of histones, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility ( putative)
