Introduction

• Tradename: Pyridium.

Indications

• symptomatic relief of pain, burning, urgency & frequency arising from irritation of the lower urinary tract

• caused by infection
• following urological procedures

• does NOT provide antimicrobial coverage

Dosage

• 100-200 mg PO TID after meals for 2 days
• do NOT use chronically
• adequate hydration is needed

• Tabs: 100 & 200 mg.

Adverse-effects

• not common (1-10%)

• headache, dizziness, epigastric cramps

• uncommon (< 1%)

• vertigo, skin pigmentation, rash, methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, hepatitis, acute renal failure

• other

• anaphylactoid-like reactions
• will turn urine orange
• will stain clothes & contact lenses

Mechanism-of-action

• azo dye that exerts a topical analgesic effect on the urinary mucosal tract
