Introduction

• Providing the patient with an explanation of disease processes, medical treatment, & prognosis, including perioperative procedures, expected postoperative sensations, possible adverse drug effects & instruction to help decrease mobility-related discomfort.

Clinical-significance

• most patients have difficulty understanding the benefits vs harms of procedures
• patients understand clinical data best when it is expressed in percentages [1]
