Introduction
- Tradename: Choledyl. (61% anhydrous theophylline).
Indications
- symptomatic treatment of asthma & reversible bronchospasm
Contraindications
- uncontrolled arrhythmias
- Caution:
Dosage
- adults: 4.7 mg/kg PO TID; administer sustained release every 12 hours
- children:
- 1-9 years: 6.2 mg/kg every 6 hours
- 9-16 years: 4.7 mg/kg every 6 hours
- Tabs: 100 & 200 mg.
- Sustained release: 400 mg, 600 mg.
- Elixir: 50 & 100 mg/5 mL.
- Sustained action: Choledyl SA:
- Tabs: 400 & 600 mg.
Pharmacokinetics
- elimination: liver
Adverse-effects
- not common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
Drug-interactions
- smoking alters metabolism
- cimetidine & possibly ranitidine
- rifampin
- phenytoin
- barbiturates
- ciprofloxacin
- erythromycin
- drug interaction(s) of lithium carbonate with xanthine
