Function
- catalytic component of the active enzyme, which catalyzes hydrolysis of ATP coupled with the exchange of Na+ & K+ ions across the plasma membrane
- action creates the electrochemical gradient of Na+ & K+ ions, providing the energy for active transport of various nutrients
* ATP + H2O + Na+(in) + K+(out) <--> ADP + phosphate + Na+(out) + K+(in)
