Function

• mediates iodide uptake in the thyroid gland
• symporter that concentrates iodide in thyroid follicular cells
• antibodies to the Na/I- symporter may occur in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis

• belongs to the Na+:solute symporter (SSF) (TC 2.A.21) family

• expression is primarily in thyroid tissue
• lower extent in mammary gland & ovary
• expression is reduced in tumors

Pathology

• defects in SLC5A5 are the cause of congenital hypothyroidism due to dyshormonogenesis type 1
