Etiology

• mumps virus

Epidemiology

• prevalence of detectable antibody 90% [5]

• 92% immunity needed for herd immunity [5]

Clinical-manifestations

• parotitis (83%)
• submaxillary gland, sublingual gland swelling (40%)
• fever (36%)
• sore throat (32%)

Laboratory

• serology: generally returned in 10-14 days

Complications

• orchitis (5%)

Management

• vaccines ( prophylaxis)

• measles-mumps-rubella vaccine ( MMR)
• mumps & rubella vaccine
• vaccinate empirically, do not wait for serology if at risk
• vaccines are live virus, avoid in pregnant women & immunocompromised

• non- vaccine strategies to control mumps:

• dentify & isolate suspect cases
• communicate with & report to local & state public health, as appropriate
• make local decisions about removing susceptible healthcare providers from areas of potential transmission
• practice handwashing and respiratory hygiene.
