Etiology
Epidemiology
- prevalence of detectable antibody 90% [5]
- 92% immunity needed for herd immunity [5]
Clinical-manifestations
- parotitis (83%)
- submaxillary gland, sublingual gland swelling (40%)
- fever (36%)
- sore throat (32%)
Laboratory
- serology: generally returned in 10-14 days
Complications
- orchitis (5%)
Management
-
- measles-mumps-rubella vaccine ( MMR)
- mumps & rubella vaccine
- vaccinate empirically, do not wait for serology if at risk
- vaccines are live virus, avoid in pregnant women & immunocompromised
- non- vaccine strategies to control mumps:
- dentify & isolate suspect cases
- communicate with & report to local & state public health, as appropriate
- make local decisions about removing susceptible healthcare providers from areas of potential transmission
- practice handwashing and respiratory hygiene.
