Function

• human counterpart of yeast mitochondrial protein importer
• may function in association with PAM complex in mitochondrial matrix
• mediates import & insertion of multiple transmembrane proteins into the mitochondrial inner membrane
• the TIM22 complex forms a twin- pore translocase that uses the membrane potential as external driving force

Structure

• the TIM22 complex core is composed of TIMM22, associated with peripheral protein FXC1/ TIM10B & the 70 kD heterohexamer; in most cases, the 70 kD complex is composed of TIMM9 & TIMM10
• also forms a complex composed of TIMM9, TIMM10/TIM10A & FXC1/ TIM10B
