Introduction

• Tradename: Kondremul.

Indications

• relief of constipation

Contraindications

• pregnancy-category C
• safety in lactation ?

Dosage

• 5-45 mL PO QHS, 5-15 mL dose for child

Pharmacokinetics

• absorption from the GI tract is minimal
• 30-60% of the emulsion may be absorbed from the intestine, especially in combination with docusate ( Colace)
• bowel relief generally occurs within 6-8 hours
• elimination: Not absorbed.

Adverse-effects

• with long-term therapy can decrease absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
• aspiration in patients at risk
• may cause mineral oil leaking from rectum

Drug-interactions

• docusate in combination causes increased systemic absorption of mineral oil & may lead to fatty liver

Mechanism-of-action

• lubricant laxative
