Introduction
- Primary lung cancers are predominantly lung carcinomas.
Pathology
- small cell carcinoma (18%)
- occurs almost exclusively in smokers
- invariably metastatic on presentation
- squamous cell carcinoma (29%)
- tends to occur more centrally
- adenocarcinoma (32%)
- most common type in non- smokers
- tends to occur more peripherally
- low-grade carcinoma frequently presenting as patchy infiltrate
- large cell carcinoma (9%)
- bronchial carcinoid (1%)
- mesothelioma
- mucoepidermoid carcinoma (0.1%)
- adenoid cystic carcinoma (< 0.1%)
- metastases
- lymph nodes (83% local, 29% distant)
- liver (73%)
- ipsilateral or contralateral lung (8%)
- bone (56%)
- brain (37%)
- adrenal (35%)
- kidney (16%)
