More Specific Terms

• knee joint

Introduction

• Lower extremity synovial joint connecting the femur with the tibia. It supports the entire weight of the body in stride, thus is vulnerable to acute injury & osteoarthritis.

Ligaments

• the knee contains a number of ligaments attaching the femur to the tibia:

• anterior cruciate ligament
• posterior cruciate ligament
• medial collateral ligament

• ligaments attaching the femur to the fibula:

• lateral collateral ligament
• arcuate poplital ligament (also attaches to tibia)
  

• The patella, a sesamoid bone covering the anterior surface of the knee, connects the quadriceps tendon with the anterior tibia via the patellar ligament.
