Function

• mediates voltage-dependent K+ ion permeability of excitable membranes
• opens & closes in response to the voltage difference across the membrane
• forms a K+-selective channel through which K+ may pass in accordance with the electrochemical gradient
• phosphorylation of Ser in the inactivation gate inhibits rapid channel closure
