Introduction

• Prevention of graft versus host disease ( GVHD)

• well established risk

• recipeints of allogeneic or autologous bone marrow or stem cell transplants
• patients receiving aggressive chemotherapy &/or radiation therapy for malignancy
• transfusions from blood relatives
• HLA-matched platelet transfusions
• congenital immunodeficiency syndromes
• premature infants
• intrauterine transfusions
• neonatal exchange transfusions

• risk less well established

• recipients of solid organ transplants

• nearly all cases of GVHD are caused by engraftment of lymphocytes from the donor organ rather than from blood products

• HIV infection

• transfusion associated GVHD has not been reported in patients with AIDS
