Function

• receptor for interleukin-15
• signal transduction involves STAT3, STAT5, STAT6, JAK2 & SYK
• isoforms 6,7,8,9 do NOT bind IL-15
• phosphorylated by activated SYK
• soluble form sIL-15R-alpha binds IL-15, thus interferes with IL-15 binding to the membrane receptor

Structure

• N & O-glycosylated
• contains 1 Sushi (CCP/SCR) domain

Compartment

• mainly found associated with the nuclear membrane
• isoforms 6,7,8,9: endoplasmic reticulum membrane, Golgi, cytoplasmic vesicle membrane
• a soluble form ( sIL-15RA) arises from proteolytic shedding of the membrane-anchored receptor; cleavage involves ADAM17

Expression

• expression of different isoforms may alter or interfere with signal transduction
