Biochemistry

• mediator of allergic reactions
• mediator of gastric acid secretion
• neurotransmitter

Pharmacology

• histamine phosphate, histamine diphosphate

Indications

• diagnostic testing for achlorhydria
• diagnostic testing for pheochromocytoma
• symptomatic relief from dizziness/ vertigo

Contraindications

• severe hypertension
• hypotension
• bronchial asthma
• vasomotor instability
• urticaria
• severe cardiac, pulmonary or renal disease

Dosage

• gastric function testing:

• 0.0275 mg/kg histamine phosphate (10 ug/kg histamine) SC

• pheochromocytoma

• 0.0275 mg/kg histamine phosphate (10 ug/kg histamine) IV
• if no response with 5 minutes, 0.1375 mg/kg histamine phosphate (50 ug/kg histamine) IV

• monitor blood pressure frequently during & immediately following administration
• dizziness: 3 drops under tongue prn

• Injection:

• 0.55 mg (equivalent to 0.2 mg histamine base)/ mL (5 mL)
• 2.75 mg (equivalent to 1.0 mg histamine base)/ mL (1 mL)
