Indications

• hepatitis A

Laboratory

• IgM anti-hepatitis A

• unexplained acute hepatitis or acute liver failure
• IgM may persist for 4-6 months

• IgG is protective

• indicates past infection
• may take 4-6 months to appear in serum
• generally persists for life
  

• PCR/southern blot/ISH for hepatitis A virus is confirmatory
