Function

• transfers a sulfuryl group to heparan sulfate
• unlike HS3ST1, does not convert non- anticoagulant heparan sulfate to anticoagulant heparan sulfate
  

• 3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + [[[Heparan_Sulfate | heparan sulfate]]]- glucosamine = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + [[[Heparan_Sulfate | heparan sulfate]]]- glucosamine 3-sulfate

Structure

• belongs to the sulfotransferase 1 family

Compartment

• Golgi membrane; single-pass type 2 membrane protein (probable)

Pathology

• substrate-specific O- sulfation generates an enzyme-modified heparan sulfate which acts as a binding receptor for Herpes simplex virus-1 ( HSV-1) & permits its entry.
