Indications

• immunization of children 2 months to 5 years of age against diseases caused by Hemophilus influenzae type b

Contraindications

• immunosuppression

• Caution:

• do not administer IV
• monitor for hypersensitivity, have epinephrine available
• contains thimerosal

• pregnancy-category C
• safety in lactation ?

Dosage

• Primary series:

• 2-6 months: 3 separate injections of 0.5 mL given at 2 month intervals
• 7-11 months: (previously unvaccinated) 2 separate injections of 0.5 mL given at 2 month intervals
• 12-14 months: (previously unvaccinated) single injection of 0.5 mL

• Booster:

• all vaccinated children receive a single booster at >= 15 months of age, but not < 2 months after previous dose
• previously unvaccinated children 15-60 months receive a single 0.5 mL injection

• Injection:

• capsular oligosaccharide 10 ug & diphtheria CRM197 protein
• 25 ug/0.5 mL dose
• 0.5, 2.5 & 5 mL vials

Pharmacokinetics

• elimination: liver Adverse reactions:

• common (> 10%)

• acute febrile reactions*

• less common (1-10%)

• irritation at injection site, anorexia, diarrhea, fever (up to 102.2 F), irritability, lethargy

• uncommon (< 1%)

• allergic or anaphylactic reactions, convulsions, vomiting, fever > 102.2 F

• * acetaminophen may be used for post- vaccination fever
