Introduction
- A stacked array of membranous cisternae & connecting tubules or vesicles between the nucleus & the secretory pole of a cell. It is receives nascent polypeptides from the endoplasmic reticulum, destined for the secretory pathway.
Classification
- cis, trans & intermediate GOLGI compartments have been described
Function
- 3 major functions: [2]
- carbohydrate processing & modification of proteins & lipids moving through the secretory pathway
- protein sorting & transport, receiving membrane from the ER & delivering it to the plasma membrane or other intracellular sites
- membrane scaffold onto which diverse signaling, sorting & cytoskeleton proteins adhere
