Function

• NMDA receptor subtype of glutamate-gated ion channels with reduced single-channel conductance, low Ca+2 permeability & low voltage-dependent sensitivity to Mg+2
• forms heteromeric channel of:

• zeta subunit ( GRIN1)
• epsilon subunit ( GRIN2A, GRIN2B, GRIN2C or GRIN2D)
• a 3rd subunit ( GRIN3A or GRIN3B)

• does not form functional homomeric channels
• found in a complex containing GRIN1 & GRIN2A

Structure

• belongs to the glutamate-gated ion channel (TC 1.A.10) family

Compartment

• cell membrane, cell junction
• synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane ( putative)
• requires GRIN1 for targeting to the plasma membrane
