Etiology

  • major cause in children 3 to 15 months old
  • most children have been exposed to the virus by age 2
  • adults who are in close contact with infected children
  • November to April
  • children younger than 2 years old
  • infections occur all year round
  • Astrovirus infects primarily infants, young children, & the elderly
  • most active during the winter months
