Introduction

• Tradename Florinef.

Indications

• Addison's disease
• replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency
• treatment of salt-losing forms of congenital adrenogenital syndrome
• orthostatic hypotension

• Adults 0.05-0.2 mg PO QD.
• Infants & children: 0.05-0.1 PO QD
• Tabs: 0.1 mg.

Adverse-effects

• most common (1-10%)

• hypertension, dizziness, edema, congestive heart failure, convulsions, headache, acne, rash, hypokalemic alkalosis, growth suppression, hyperglycemia, suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, peptic ulcer, bruising, muscle weakness, cataracts

Drug-interactions

• aminoglutethimide
• anticholinesterases
• barbiturates
• carbamazepine
• phenytoin
• rifampin
• vaccines (live virus)

Mechanism-of-action

• pure mineralocorticoid
