Introduction
- Creatinine is formed through non- enzymatic dehydration of tissue creatine; muscle contains 98% of total body creatine. Creatinine is not recycled, or used in metabolism, thus represents a waste product of creatine metabolism.
- Creatinine is filtered by glomeruli, but is not reabsorbed to an appreciable extent under normal conditions. In congestive heart failure & in uncontrolled diabetes, tubular reabsorption of creatinine may occur. Creatinine is also excreted by the proximal tubules in normal individuals adding & additional 10-40% to the total creatinine in the urine.
