Introduction

• Available Fall 2005. OTC

Indications

• birth control

• 84-90% effective

• less effective in women who have given birth Contradindications:
• does NOT prevent sexually transmitted disease
• use with caution if sensitive to polyurethane or sulfa
• should not be worn for more than 30 consecutive hours.

Pharmacokinetics

• effective immediately afetr insertion & for 24 hours
• must remain in place for at least six hours after intercourse

Adverse-effects

• sensitivity to nonoxynol-9 may cause localized burning, itching, redness, or irritation (these symptoms typically subside within a few days to a week)

Mechanism-of-action

• soft, disposable, polyurethane foam containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9
