Reference-interval

• whole blood: lysis in 48-72 hours [2]
• Thompson: lysis in 2-7 hours [2]
• euglobulin: lysis > 60 minutes [1]

Clinical-significance

• Whole blood:

• lysis in < 24 hours indicates significant fibrinolysis
• lysis in < 2 hours indicates severe fibrinolysis

Increases

• aminocaproic acid

Decreases

• fibrinolysis*
• fibrinolytic therapy
• chronic liver disease (50% of patients)
• alpha-2 plasmin* May be normal in DIC if plasminogen has been depleted.. inhibitor [3]
  

• * May be normal in DIC if plasminogen has been depleted

Specimen

• whole clotted blood (37 degrees C)
• diluted whole blood (Thompson)

Interferences

• affected by plasma levels of:

• plasminogen activator
• plasminogen
• fibrinolytic inhibitor

• if fibrinogen is < 50 mg/dL, clot may be difficult to see
