Claudin 16
From Anvita Health Wiki
Contents |
Function
- plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through Ca+2-independent cell- adhesion activity
- involved in paracellular Mg+2 reabsorption
- required for a selective paracellular conductance
- may form, alone or in partnership with other constituents, an intercellular pore permitting paracellular passage of Mg+2 & Ca+2 down their electrochemical gradients
- alternatively, it could be a sensor of Mg+2 concentration that could alter paracellular permeability mediated by other factors
Structure
- belongs to the claudin family
Compartment
- cell junction, tight junction
- cell membrane; multi-pass membrane protein
Expression
- kidney-specific, including the thick ascending limb of Henle
Pathology
- defects in CLDN16 are the cause of hypomagnesemia type 3
