Introduction

• Ca(OCOCH3)2

Indications

• treatment of hyperphosphatemia in renal failure

Dosage

• 2 tabs PO TID after meals

• Tabs: 667 mg.

Pharmacokinetics

• 20% absorbed & eliminated by the kidneys
• majority is not absorbed & is eliminated in the feces

Adverse-effects

• uncommon (< 1%)
• hypercalcemia
• headache
• hypophosphatemia
• nausea/vomiting
• constipation
• abdominal pain
• thirst
• anorexia

Drug-interactions

• may antagonize effects of calcium channel blockers
• may decrease absorption of tetracyclines & quinolones
• may increase toxicity of digoxin, precipitating arrhythmias
  
• drug interaction(s) of bisphosphonate with Ca+2

Mechanism-of-action

• binds dietary phosphate in the gut to form calcium phosphate
• calcium phosphate is eliminated in the feces
