More Specific Terms

• blood transfusion
• indications for CMV seronegative blood products
• indications for irradiation of cellular blood products

Introduction

• A facility for collection, processing, analysis (including typing & serology), storage & distribution of blood & blood products.
  

• Emergencies

• group O erythrocytes can be transfused to anyone
• group AB plasma & platelets can be transfused to anyone
• Rh-positive patients can safely receive D-positive or D-negative blood, but Rh-negative patients must receive D-negative blood & platelets
  

• Treatment parameters:

• expect 5000-10,000/ uL increase in platelet count for each unit of platelets transfused
• an increase < 5000/ uL is associated with alloimmunization
