Epidemiology

• biotin is present in food protein bound or as biocytin

Function

• coenzyme in the metabolism of fatty acids & leucine
• role in gluconeogenesis
• role in the citric acid cycle
• functions in the transfer carbon dioxide
• cofactor in several carboxylases:

• acetyl-CoA carboxylase
• 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase
• propionyl-CoA carboxylase
• pyruvate carboxylase

Pathology

• avidin in egg whites binds to biotin rendering it unavailable
• avidin is denatured by heat
• biotin deficiency is rare
