- promotes cholesterol efflux from macrophage cells
- detected in HDL, LDL & VLDL
- secreted by a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein ( MTTP)-dependent mechanism, probably as a VLDL-associated protein that is subsequently transferred to HDL
- may be involved in myocardium-protective mechanisms against lipid accumulation
