Etiology

• common in:

• 95% of patients with pernicious anemia

• 60% of patients with pernicious anemia also have intrinsic factor-blocking antibodies

• up to 50% of patients atrophic gastritis without pernicious anemia
• 25-30% of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis

• lower frequency associated with:

• Addison's disease
• myasthenia gravis
• juvenile diabetes mellitus
• gastric ulcer
• iron-deficiency anemia
• Sjogren's syndrome

Principle

• antibodies directed against microsomal components of gastric parietal cells.
• assay detects microsomal & cell-surface parietal cell autoantibodies

Methods

• indirect immunofluorescence

Specimen

• serum
• stable for 12 months at -20 degrees C

Interferences

• no chemical interferences or in vivo effects known.
