Etiology

• gastritis
• pernicious anemia (50%)
• hyperthyroidism (3-6%)
• insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (3-6%)

Specimen

• serum or plasma ( EDTA)
• avoid administration of vitamin B12 48 hours prior to drawing sample.
• stable 4 hours at room temperature of 3 days refrigerated.
• freeze at -20 degrees C for longer storage.

Interferences

• false positives:

• increased cyanocobalamin
