Introduction

• A 1:1 complex of ethylenediamine & theophylline.

• Tradenames: Somophyllin, Somophyllin-DF.

Contraindications

• pregnancy-category C
• safety in lactation ?

Dosage

• Intravenous:

• Load 6 mg/kg IV over 20-30 minutes.
• Drip 1 g in 250 mL D5W (4 mg/mL) at 0.5-0.7 mg/kg/ hr (70 kg: 0.7 mg/kg/ hr = 11 mL/ hr).
• Pediatrics: 1 mg/kg/ hr.

• Oral: 200 mg PO TID/ QID.

• Tabs: 100 & 200 mg.
• Liquid: 125 mg/5 mL.

Pharmacokinetics

• elimination: liver

Adverse-effects

• (also see theophylline)

• uncommon at serum concentrations < 20 ug/mL
• not common (1-10%)

• nausea/vomiting, restlessness, tachycardia

• uncommon (< 1%)

• skin rash, insomnia, irritability, tremor, seizures, gastric irritation, allergic reactions
